Already in the late 40s of the last century, VW Beetle drivers were handes over watches if they had managed 100,000 km (breakdown-free) with their vehicle. Originally the watches were equipped with personalized engraving on the back cover. With the beginning of the 50s they only became only a single engraving with the "VW" logo, the number "100 000", and including "kilometers", framed by a laurel.
Besides Junghans watches by Mauthe (and their sub-brand "Comet") and watches by Laco are known.
The watches, although from different manufacturers, were almost exclusively provided with a black, usually shiny dial. The case was always gold plated and equipped with just such hands. On the numbers and indices either luminous (radium) or gilding was appropriate. There are also watches known that have only the VW logo on the back. Presumably, these were spent when the beetle had completed 25 years.
