Revision of a caliber Junghans 653.01; Durowe 7526 Junghans Discus

UFO landing in Schramberg

As it was already announced in the newsletter: The revision of the caliber Junghans 653.01 had to be done and brought some surprises.

The movement in the Junghans Discus showed some flaws but fortunately I had another Durowe 7526/2 in my spare fundus. More on this later.

Lying next to the Discus the spare movement showed with its 11.5 lines in diameter (about 25.6 mm) the big difference to the the size of the case of the watch.

The first inspection:

The reinforced acrylic glass had a continuous crack and also at the edges it showed already damage and had to be completely replaced.

On the dial I found some dirt. The movement ran with manual winding but not with its automatic rotorwind. When rotating the case an ugly grinding sound was coming up to a stop.

The transition values in manual wind were not necessarily convincing.

The crown was still rough, even if the chromium plating was damaged.

An exceptional dial

The 70s ruled!

The dial of the Discus is really exceptional. The gilded indexes are extremely sublime and give the dial the typical 70s style. The black day-disc first seems incongruous and almost looks alien next to the white date disc but there are better contrast and easier readability of the day and date.

The catalog number of the watch was 53/4753 and Junghans discus watches are available in two case versions: with a curved case between the lugs and to that shown with a straight portion.

Two high mounting frames

The movement is perfectly fixed by two mounting frames in the case. The high quality and robust dial not affected by the case at its edges and on the front.

The thick dial feet are well fixed by lateral screws and the blade does not wobble.

The disassembly takes its course

After the hands and the dial are removed the dismantling continues. The black day disk and the white date disc were as well as the dial and the movement lint and dirt .

The problem arises

After the sensitive parts of the face (hands, dial) were removed the movement could be inspected in more detail and it was found that the rotor very ran "out of round" and the grinding noise declared himself quickly. The rotor cut at the movement and even stopped the balance.

The rotor was removed and the reason for the wobbly was found.

The axis of the rotor was not broken in to itslef but completely torn out of its anchorage and was still in the camp of the rotor. After removing the automatic group the damage could be visited from below.

The automatic group was completely dismantled and taken apart.

I had to resort to the spare movement and remove the rotor axis there and hope that it works. The spare movement was a Durowe 7526/2.

For securing the sensitive balance this will be removed. The view of the anchor is free and it will show the coinage of the name of the caliber (7526 D) and the half-rate of vibration of the balance: 21,600.

After the automatic group was removed and disassembled I could continue. The disc of the day indication tumbled upon inversion of the movement down quickly and the view on the circuit of the day disk was free. Among them is the cover of the mechanism for switching the date ring which was fixed.

Note: Left-hand thread!

Screws which not only have one screw slot but two smaller, thin parallel are equipped with a left-hand thread. Here one must therefore necessarily pay attention to the opposite direction of rotation when loosening the screw!

When I loosen the little screw that fixed the cover plate of the date ring mechanism a soft click was heard and a lever jumped under the cover in a different position. The hole (red arrow) belonged to the pin (green arrow) and not next to it...

On the back of the plate a small slug-like lever can be seen that triggers the date change.

At the winding stem is the mechanism for high-speed switching of the day- and date disc.

Ersatzachse und defekte Achse; spare axle and defective axis ;
