As announced in the newsletter I wanted to repair this caliber Junghans J98/5 or Junghans 698.75. This actually oval caliber proved to be so much that the Junghans designers decided to provide it with an attached automatic module - and made the movement round.

The watch standing here on the revision is in a moderate condition and was offered as "bad" and "not working".

The front of the watch was underwhelming: The glass was chipped and scrached, the crown with the winding stem could be pulled out without resistance, the dial seemed not to be in the best condition and in the hands and also on the dial lacked the luminous material.

After the opening of the case back I saw that the rotor was missing.

Spare rotor

Luckily I found a spare rotor in my spare parts. Unfortunately my fundus arrived at this watch but to its limits but further details in the near future...

I just mounted the rotor to test whether this fits at all - it was the right one, nevertheless the winding didn´t do it´s job.

The movement is fixed with clamps in the case.

First I went to the dismantling of the automatic group. And I still left the movement in the case. After removing the bridge the gear of the automatic winding was visible. On the left a small rocker can be seen which allows a winding in both directions of rotation of the rotor.

On the underside of the bridge almost a hairline spring is attached. To make me the operation of the wheels clear I put them also on the bridge.

In brief inspection I overlooked at this point that a pin of a wheel was broken and most likely is to be the cause for the non- functioning of the automatic winding.

The movement holding ring

Junghans-J98-5-Junghans-698.75-031.png

movement holding ring

Junghans-J98-5-Junghans-698.75-033.png

Now the movement was finally allowed to leave the case. It is additionally fixed with a movement holding ring which makes the form movement a round movement in principle. The ring has a cut that looks added later. On occasion I 'll see if this is with the other Junghans J98/5.

Now the rest followed. The Junghans J98 is a caliber in a pier construction and has a simple but well-functioning rocking bar. The balance is a two-leg ring balance without adjustment screws. In the photo you can clearly see that the balance wheel has tiny holes for the balancing.

Under the balance is embossed the code for the month and the year of manufacture: B 3

The Junghans J98/5 was first presented in catalogs in January 1953. This means that this watch is one of the earlier ones - prepared in February 1953.

In other Junghans J98 the code is sometimes found under the barrel as seen at the photo of the other movement.

In the further dismantling there were still some problems to overcome. Initially only  some dirt arrived, but that is often found on watches at that age.

I still could not declamp the dial. After everything was dismantled on severe parts, I saw that one of the lateral movement retaining screws only had half a screw head. The tiny grub screws press the dial feet into the board from the side and it was clearly seen that here someone had already been tampered with. The rest of the screw head was bruised badly and I did not manage to loosen the screw.

This also explained that one has left his marks on the dial, that can be found at the level of the defective dial screw. The edge of the dial is bent and on the front can be seens a damage to the surface.

Finally, I managed to gently pry the dial without loosen the screw. Here there is a risk, that the dial feet break, but it fortunately remained firmly ...
